The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, to enable Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to take the examination from 2027.

The board disclosed this on its official social media platforms following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.

According to JAMB, the proposed centre will provide eligible Nigerians in the diaspora with easier access to the UTME, particularly those seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The board said the initiative would eliminate the need for candidates in North America to travel to Nigeria solely to sit for the examination.

JAMB explained that the planned centre is part of its broader efforts to expand the reach of Nigerian tertiary education internationally and strengthen the relationship between Nigerians abroad and the country’s education system.

The board said the initiative would also create greater opportunities to promote Nigerian tertiary institutions internationally and make the UTME more accessible to Nigerians living in Canada.

“For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” the board stated.

JAMB further disclosed that it was working towards establishing the Ottawa centre, with operations expected to commence in 2027.

The board described the proposed centre as an important step towards improving access to Nigerian tertiary education for Nigerians in the diaspora while reducing barriers faced by those seeking admission into institutions in the country.

It added that the initiative would further strengthen the connection between Nigerians abroad and Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
