KANO TOPS 2026 NECO PERFORMANCE CHART WITH 74,413 CANDIDATES

Kano State has emerged as the top-performing state in the 2026 National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, recording 74,413 candidates who obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Lagos State ranked second with 72,496 candidates, while Oyo State placed third with 55,543 candidates.
The result marks the second consecutive year Kano has recorded the highest number of candidates with at least five credits, including English and Mathematics, after also topping the 2025 NECO performance chart.
Reacting to the development, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, commended the students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders for their contributions to the achievement.
Yusuf, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, on Saturday in Kano, said the state’s consecutive performance showed that its sustained investment in education was yielding measurable results.
The governor said Kano had maintained the top position in the NECO rankings for two consecutive years, describing the development as evidence of progress in the state’s education sector.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to prioritise education through increased funding, improved learning facilities, teacher recruitment and training, scholarships and support for indigent students.
According to him, the Kano State Government spent more than N4.4 billion in 2026 to sponsor candidates for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, particularly students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
He said the initiative was aimed at reducing financial barriers and ensuring that students could participate in the examinations under improved conditions.
Yusuf added that education had consistently received the largest share of the state’s budget under his administration.
He said education accounted for about 29.95 per cent of the state’s budget in 2024, while the allocation rose to N168.35 billion, representing 31 per cent, in the 2025 budget.
For 2026, the governor said N405.35 billion was allocated to education, representing about 30 per cent of the state’s N1.478 trillion budget.
He explained that the government’s investment extended beyond examination sponsorship to classroom renovation, teacher recruitment, provision of learning materials, school uniforms, scholarships and other initiatives aimed at improving education standards.
The governor also highlighted several recognitions received by his administration for its education initiatives at both national and international levels.
He said the administration’s objective was to develop an education system capable of equipping Kano’s young population with the knowledge and skills needed for higher education, employment, innovation and leadership.
Yusuf added that Kano recorded more than five million schoolchildren in its latest annual school census, underscoring the need for continued investment in the sector.
