LAGOS GOVT ISSUES TRAFFIC ADVISORY AS KARA BRIDGE REPAIR WORKS BEGIN JULY 28

The Lagos State Government has advised motorists to expect temporary traffic disruptions around the Kara Bridge axis as the Federal Ministry of Works commences the replacement of the bridge’s expansion joint along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The repair work, according to the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, will begin on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, and is expected to last for two weeks.

In a traffic advisory issued on Monday, the ministry said the rehabilitation exercise is aimed at improving the safety and durability of the bridge for the benefit of all road users.

To create a safe working environment for engineers and construction personnel, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch throughout the duration of the project.

The ministry noted that the lane reduction is likely to cause partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis, particularly near the Fatgbems Turn, where some motorists are expected to make U-turns or divert to alternative routes to avoid congestion.

However, it assured commuters travelling towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn that traffic is expected to flow with minimal disruption despite the ongoing repair works.

Motorists have therefore been urged to exercise patience, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management officials who will be deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth vehicular movement.

The ministry also encouraged road users to plan their journeys ahead of time, explore alternative routes where possible and comply with all traffic advisories to minimise delays during the rehabilitation period.

While appealing for public understanding, the Lagos State Government reiterated that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to ensure the successful completion of the bridge maintenance project and to enhance the long-term safety of motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
