Lagos Strengthens Teachers’ Capacity for 21st Century Classroom Engagement
The Lagos State Government, through the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) in collaboration with Theraplus Consultant, has organised a two-day capacity-building workshop to equip teachers with the skills needed to effectively manage classroom interactions and dynamics in a 21st-century learning environment.
Declaring the workshop open at the State Teaching Service Staff Development Centre in Owutu, Ikorodu, TESCOM Chairman, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, said the training was timely given the rapidly evolving nature of classroom engagement and the need for Lagos teachers to keep pace with global educational standards.
She urged participants to move beyond the traditional teacher-centred approach to learning and embrace their roles as facilitators, mentors, coaches and lifelong learners who inspire students to think critically, collaborate and innovate.
Peregrino noted that every classroom comprises learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, interests and aspirations, stressing that teachers must foster inclusive environments where every student feels respected, valued, safe and motivated to succeed.
She added that the Lagos State Government remains committed to improving the quality of education through continuous teacher development, digital transformation, curriculum innovation and enhanced learning environments aimed at preparing students for global competitiveness and responsible citizenship.
The TESCOM chairman also warned teachers against bullying and sexual abuse, reminding them that Lagos State has stringent laws against sexual offences and domestic violence.
She encouraged participants to make the most of the training by engaging actively, learning with an open mind and sharing knowledge with colleagues.
Speaking at the event, TESCOM board members Dr. Olusegun Agbaje and Mrs. Abimbola Idowu urged participants to take the training seriously and replicate the knowledge gained among teachers in their respective schools.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Olawale Ojikutu, encouraged teachers to seize the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of modern classroom management, noting that only educators who embrace continuous learning, adaptability and innovation will remain effective in preparing students for the future.
The workshop, themed “Understanding Classroom Interactions and Dynamics in a 21st Century Learning Space,” attracted more than 400 teachers on Grade Levels 08 and 09 from the six education districts and the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB). It was conducted in two streams to enhance participation, interaction and effective learning.
