Coventry City manager, Frank Lampard, has expressed frustration over three controversial VAR decisions following his side’s 3-1 defeat to Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday night.

Yann Gboho gave Coventry the lead, but a quickfire brace from Thierno Barry and a goal from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall secured victory for Everton.

Despite the defeat, Lampard’s major concern was what he considered three questionable officiating decisions that went against his team.

The first incident occurred in the opening half when Everton defender James Tarkowski appeared to pull Caleb Yirenkyi’s hair inside the penalty area. However, referee Stuart Attwell dismissed Coventry’s appeals.

Speaking after the match, Lampard said he was disappointed that the incident was not considered a foul.

“They are saying it’s not enough of a pull and I think it’s a hard area to be,” he said.

The second contentious moment came shortly after the restart when Taiwo Awoniyi went down following a challenge from Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Lampard believed the incident warranted a penalty, arguing that the referee should have awarded a foul during the match.

“Taiwo, for me, on the line of the box is a penalty. You’ve got to give the foul in real time anyway; the ref did let it go, and I felt it was a penalty,” he said.

The third incident involved Barry’s second goal, which was reviewed for a possible handball but eventually allowed to stand.

Lampard maintained that the Everton forward had used his hand in the build-up to the goal and questioned why VAR did not overturn the decision.

“The Barry one is a handball, I have heard they are saying it didn’t touch his hand, but I have seen an angle where he has flicked it in with the final touch. VAR is there for that,” he added.
