A 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, has died after entering a well converted into a refuse pit in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, in an attempt to retrieve a mobile phone.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday and was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service.

In a statement issued by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, the Fire Service said it received a distress call at about 11:13 a.m. from one of its personnel, Kabiru Tata, notifying authorities of the emergency.

According to the statement, firefighters from the state headquarters were immediately dispatched to the location.

“Upon arrival, rescue personnel found a 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, trapped inside a well that had been converted into a waste disposal pit,” the statement said.

Preliminary findings indicated that the victim had entered the confined space in an attempt to recover a mobile phone that had accidentally fallen inside but was unable to make his way out.

Firefighters successfully retrieved Usman from the well; however, he was brought out unconscious.

He was later confirmed dead, with authorities attributing the cause to oxygen depletion and excessive heat within the enclosed space.

The remains of the deceased were subsequently handed over to the Ward Head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to observe safety precautions around wells and other confined spaces to avoid similar incidents.

He also called on parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure abandoned wells are properly covered or filled, warning against entering wells, pits and enclosed spaces without adequate safety measures or professional assistance.
