MILITARY FAMILIES’ WELFARE KEY TO PERSONNEL MORALE, SAYS OLUYEDE’S WIFE

The President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association, Mrs Mernan Oluyede, has emphasised the importance of the welfare and security of military families to the morale and effectiveness of personnel.
Oluyede said providing children of military personnel with safe, supportive and nurturing homes was essential, given the pressures associated with military service, including deployments, prolonged absences, frequent relocations and uncertainty.
She spoke on Wednesday at a child welfare programme organised by the National Defence College Officers’ Welfare Association in Abuja.
According to her, resilient military families give personnel the peace of mind required to concentrate fully on their responsibilities.
“When our children are secure, properly educated and emotionally supported, our homes become more resilient. When our homes are resilient, our personnel are better positioned to discharge their responsibilities with confidence and peace of mind,” she said.
Oluyede also urged parents and caregivers to pay closer attention to children’s mental and emotional wellbeing, noting that children may struggle to express feelings of anxiety, loneliness and fear.
She further warned parents about online risks facing children, including cyberbullying, inappropriate content, exploitation and misinformation.
The DEPOWA president said protecting children in the digital age required active parental involvement, open communication and safe environments where children could freely discuss their experiences.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the National Defence College Officers’ Welfare Association, Mrs Hauwa Ahmed, said the organisation remained committed to improving the welfare of women, children and vulnerable groups through seminars, medical interventions and community outreach.
Ahmed said the programme was aimed at promoting awareness of child wellbeing, education, protection and the opportunities and dangers associated with social media.
