Some Nigerians have taken to social media platform X to mock South Africa following Bafana Bafana’s defeat to Mexico in their opening 2026 World Cup match.
South Africa national football team lost 2–0 to Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday.
The team’s performance, along with moments involving two South African players during the game, quickly became the subject of online banter.
Interestingly, other Africans also joined in the mockery, with many expressing support for Mexico despite the match already being played.
Social media platforms were filled with Africans dressed in Mexico’s El Tri jerseys, dancing to Mexican music and adopting Latin-inspired identities to show dissatisfaction with South Africa.
The online reactions reflect broader tensions tied to concerns over xenophobic attacks against other Black Africans in South Africa.
Reports indicate that countries such as Ghana and Nigeria are already repatriating their citizens from South Africa due to these attacks.
