OBASANJO JOKES ABOUT ATTENDING OLOTA’S 70TH BIRTHDAY, SAYS ‘EXCUSE ME’ FOR 80TH

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo brought humour and warmth to the 60th birthday celebration of the Olota of Ota, Oba Professor Abdulkabir Obalanlege, as he offered prayers for the monarch and joked about attending his future milestone birthdays.
Speaking in Yoruba at the anniversary celebration, the 89-year-old former president recalled calling the traditional ruler early in the morning to pray for him before making a lighthearted remark about the monarch’s upcoming birthdays.
“Kabiyesi, I called you this morning and prayed for you,” Obasanjo said.
He subsequently amused guests by calculating his age at the time of the monarch’s future birthday celebrations.
Obasanjo noted that he would be 99 when the Olota celebrates his 70th birthday in 10 years, while he would be approaching 110 by the time the monarch turns 80.
“I’m here celebrating your 60th birthday. I’ll join you for your 70th birthday in 10 years, but for your 80th birthday, which is 20 years from now, ẹ yonda mi (you’ll excuse me); you’ll celebrate that one the way it pleases you,” he said.
His remarks sparked laughter among dignitaries, traditional rulers and other guests who gathered to celebrate the monarch’s diamond jubilee.
The event also featured a memorable cultural moment when Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, prostrated before Obasanjo after joining him on stage, highlighting the traditional Yoruba culture of respect for elders.
