An eyewitness, Mrs Mary Aniekan, has recounted how a fire broke out at the affected market shortly after an electrical spark was noticed in the area.
According to Aniekan, traders and other people around the market immediately raised the alarm and made frantic efforts to put out the fire and rescue their belongings.
“I was in my shop when we saw the fire and people running to safety, while others were trying to put the fire out but they could not. The fire started when AEDC restored electricity,” she said.
She added that firefighters arrived at the scene but were unable to immediately contain the blaze after exhausting their water supply.
“Firefighters came but their water finished and up till now they have not been able to put the fire out,” Aniekan said.
The fire reportedly spread rapidly, destroying several shops and goods before emergency responders could contain the situation.
Several traders were seen attempting to recover whatever they could from their shops, while others watched helplessly as their businesses and properties were consumed by the inferno.
Firefighters were deployed to the market to battle the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining shops and structures.
No loss of life was reported, although the incident caused extensive damage to property and left several traders counting their losses.
The exact value of the goods destroyed has yet to be established, while the official cause of the fire is yet to be independently confirmed by relevant emergency authorities.
However, the eyewitness linked the outbreak to an electrical spark that occurred shortly after electricity supply was restored.
The incident caused panic among traders and residents, with affected business owners calling for urgent assistance to assess the damage and support their recovery from the losses.
