A joint team of officials from the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, CR-SEMA, has visited the scene of a tanker explosion in Calabar to assess the extent of the damage.

The incident occurred early Sunday when a petroleum tanker loaded with products reportedly collided with a stationary truck and exploded.

The explosion killed the driver and his conductor, while several nearby shops and parked vehicles were also affected by the fire.

The Director-General of CR-SEMA, Efa Nyong, led the joint assessment team comprising officials of the agency and the Nigerian Red Cross Society to the scene.

The team assessed the impact of the fire on surrounding shops and other properties as personnel of the Cross River State Fire Service continued efforts to completely extinguish the blaze.

The team was received and taken around the affected areas by the Chairman of Odukpani Local Government Council, Etim Asido, who briefed them on the incident and the extent of damage recorded.

Nyong sympathised with the families of the deceased and injured victims, as well as business owners whose shops and properties were affected by the fire.

He assured the affected persons that the state government, through CR-SEMA and other relevant stakeholders, would continue to assess the situation and consider appropriate interventions.

Speaking at the scene, Asido commended the state fire service for its prompt response and appreciated the state government and CR-SEMA for their swift intervention following the incident.

After the assessment, Asido led the team to an Apostolic Church near the scene, where prayers of thanksgiving were offered after the fire was brought under control and a potentially more devastating outcome was averted.
