SECURITY AGENCIES INVESTIGATE MURDER, ROBBERY OF OGUN POLY STUDENTS

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of DS Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic says security agencies have launched investigations into the robbery attack that claimed the life of a student and left several others injured in the Eruku community of Ogun State.
The union disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday following a high-level security meeting held on August 3 with the institution’s management, traditional rulers, alumni representatives and security agencies operating within the Itori axis.
The statement, jointly signed by SUG President Okunuga Opeyemi, General Secretary Idris Amidat and Public Relations Officer Caleb-Martins Hannah, said the meeting focused on addressing rising insecurity, student welfare and other challenges affecting students on and off campus.
According to the union, security agencies, in collaboration with the school management and community leaders, have commenced extensive investigations aimed at identifying and arresting those responsible for the deadly attack.
It added that discussions were ongoing with the 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Alamala Barracks, on the establishment of a military base and checkpoint in the area to enhance security.
The SUG also directed all students to carry valid school identity cards whenever they leave their residences, citing intensified stop-and-search operations by security personnel across Itori and neighbouring communities.
The union further expressed concern over the rising cost of accommodation, alleging that arbitrary rent increases by landlords had forced some students to abandon their education despite being able to afford tuition fees.
It also lamented persistent insecurity in Afowowa, Eruku and the Complex Gasline area, as well as unstable electricity supply in Eruku, describing both issues as threats to students’ safety and academic activities.
Addressing reports of a ₦50,000 penalty imposed on students who fail to lock hostel gates in Afowowa, the SUG said the community’s traditional ruler explained that the measure was introduced to prevent hoodlums from gaining access to student residences.
The union urged students in the area to comply with the directive while consultations on the policy continue.
At the end of the meeting, stakeholders resolved to strengthen joint security patrols involving security agencies, community leaders and the institution.
The management also announced plans to construct on-campus hostels to provide students with safer and more affordable accommodation, while further discussions will be held with landlords’ associations to address rising rental costs and protect students’ interests.
The development follows a robbery attack in the Eruku community on July 28, during which suspected armed robbers reportedly invaded about 15 houses, killed a final-year Higher National Diploma student and injured at least three others, prompting protests by students and the postponement of examinations.
