President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed appreciation to FIFA after the world football governing body suspended the red card issued to United States striker Folarin Balogun, making him eligible for the team’s World Cup round-of-16 clash against Belgium.
Balogun had been expected to miss Monday’s encounter after receiving a straight red card in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 for stepping on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s foot.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the suspension would be deferred for one year, clearing the striker to feature in the knockout fixture.
Reacting to the decision, Trump said: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice!”
Balogun has been key to the USA’s progress in the tournament and his absence against Belgium would have been a blow to the team.
FIFA said in a statement: “In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.”
After the red card, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had called for the card to be rescinded.
