FOUR KILLED AS POLICE RESIST ATTACK ON INEC OFFICE IN IMO
DAMILOLA LAWRENCE
Professor Sylvia Uchenna Agu, the REC for Imo State, has reported that unknown gunmen attacked the State Headquarters office in Owerri. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Monday, 12th of December 2022.
Four people were killed, including one police officer, in the police-repelled attack on the headquarters of the Independent National Committee.
According to the Spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Mike Abattam, he said the gunmen numbering over 10 came with petrol bombs and dynamite.
He did, however, claim that the hoodlums were met by security personnel who repulsed the attack and killed three of the attackers.
He also said one of the attackers was arrested by the police and three vehicles used by hoodlums recovered.
Some parts of the building on the INEC premises were razed.
As the 2023 elections approach, the nationwide attacks on INEC offices have become more concerning. Prior to Monday’s attack, two other attacks in Imo were reported – in the Oru West Local Government Area and the Orlu Local Government Area.
In addition, hoodlums set fire to the INEC office in Ebonyi State’s Izzi Local Government Area in November. Gunmen also attacked the commission’s offices in Osun and Ogun states. These attacks resulted in the destruction of several Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and other electoral items.
The INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has however, assured Nigerians that the attacks on the offices of the electoral umpire won’t affect the 2023 general polls.
