Festus Keyamo, the minister of aviation, has made suggestions on plans to start operating cargo flights again between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria.

At the third ministerial update on Monday in Abuja, Keyamo enumerated the aviation industry’s accomplishments and stated that the feat will be made possible by cooperation with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Keyamo claims that after meeting with his counterpart on a recent trip to Saudi Arabia, the decision was made.

“I have good news for you from Saudi Arabia. I met my counterpart in Saudi Arabia and we have agreed to resume cargo flights,” Keyamo stated.

He emphasised that although these flights had been put on hold for a while, the new agreement would allow cargo services to resume in order to improve commerce and logistical ties between the two countries.

On Monday, Keyamo also spoke about another crucial matter pertaining to the release of foreign airline cash that was held in Nigeria.

According to Keyamo, the Federal Government has also made sure that a backlog of payments that had been held for international airlines is cleared, which is why Emirates Airlines has returned to flying in Nigeria.

He pointed out that this has improved the aviation sector’s financial stability.

After a protracted hiatus, Emirates declared on May 16, 2024, that it would resume flights to Nigerian airports on October 1, 2024.

In January, the Federal Government “concluded the payment of all verified claims” by foreign airlines, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which also paid an extra $64.44 million to the affected airlines.

The announcement stated that “all the verified airline claims had now been cleared,” bringing the total verified amount paid to the aviation industry to $136.73 million.
