LAWMAKER ENCOURAGES NIGERIANS TO PREVENT CHOLERA LIKE COVID-19
Agency Report
A lawmaker representing the Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, James Faleke has urged Nigerians to address the cholera outbreak in certain regions of the nation with the same seriousness as they addressed the corona virus pandemic.
Faleke made the request in an interview on Monday in Lagos State with the News Agency of Nigeria.
According to a recent report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control,53 cholera-related deaths have been reported.
Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the NCDC, said that the National Emergency Operation Centre for cholera has been launched by the Federal Government.
According to Idris, “as of June 24, 2024, there had been 53 recorded deaths and 1,528 suspected cases reported across 31 states and 107 LGAs, with a case fatality rate of 3.5 percent since the beginning of the year.”
Faleke responded by saying that more should be done by Nigerians to stop the cholera outbreak.
“Every Nigerian needs to be cautious; our attitude towards cleanliness matters,” he declared. We ought to approach this cholera outbreak with the same seriousness as we did with COVID-19.
“Many people have died from cholera.” We expected that there wouldn’t be a cholera outbreak in Nigeria in this day and age.
But since it has arrived, we must address it. Individuals ought to exercise greater caution in what they eat or drink.
There are lots of fake goods in the market. Give up using fake goods. Take clean water; you don’t have to drink anything,” he said.
The Lagos State Government, on Sunday, through the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola, urged public servants to maintain good hygiene to avoid contracting cholera or other water and airborne diseases.
