The Lagos State Police Command has debunked a report alleging that senior officers were directed to pay N6,000 each as 2025 Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) dues to the wife of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police described the publication by Sahara Reporters as “false, malicious, unfounded, and a figment of imagination.”

According to the statement, POWA is a non-governmental organisation established to cater to the welfare of police officers’ wives, children, and families of deceased officers, including widows. The Command clarified that contributions to POWA are voluntary and restricted to senior officers from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and above, including Commissioners of Police.

“These dues are paid into a POWA account domiciled in Lagos State and are used for welfare programmes within the Command, not for the POWA President or her office in Abuja,” Hundeyin explained.

He further noted that the association carries out several empowerment initiatives and welfare projects funded by donations and voluntary contributions, stressing that the claims linking the IGP’s wife directly to the dues were baseless.

The Command urged the public to disregard the report and advised the media against being used to “misinform the public or malign the integrity” of the POWA leadership.
