The Niger State Police Command has arrested a man who allegedly impersonated a soldier in an attempt to rob motorcycle riders in Minna. Another suspect was also apprehended in Bangi town for stealing a motorcycle.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday.

According to him, the first suspect, identified as Ibrahim Abdullahi from Kubwa, Abuja, was intercepted by a surveillance team at the city gate on Tuesday around 4:20 p.m.

“The suspect impersonated a soldier and intercepted a motorcycle with two persons along Tutungo-Farindoki road. He claimed to be taking them to the Army Barracks in Minna but diverted towards the city gate. The victims raised an alarm when he attempted to escape with the motorcycle, attracting a crowd before he was arrested,” the statement said.

Abiodun noted that Abdullahi has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

In a separate case, police in Bangi town arrested one Augustine Mathew, 25, on September 15 for allegedly stealing a Daylong motorcycle.

“It was reported at Bangi Division that an unknown person trespassed into a residence and stole a Daylong motorcycle. A surveillance team arrested Augustine Mathew with the motorcycle within the town, and he confessed to the crime,” Abiodun stated, adding that the suspect has been charged to court.

The police command also recalled a previous case involving a dismissed soldier who posed as military personnel to defraud PoS operators of hundreds of thousands of naira before being caught.
