Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, will on Friday deliver a statewide broadcast at 6 p.m., his first since returning to office following the lifting of emergency rule in the state.

Fubara disclosed this while speaking to journalists at the Government House, Port Harcourt, where he expressed gratitude to residents for the massive show of support that greeted his return.

“I’m really humbled by what I saw at the airport. That reception showed love and solidarity, and it reflected the bond between the people and the state government,” the governor said.

The governor, accompanied by his wife, top aides, security chiefs, and other stakeholders, inspected his official residence before proceeding to his office on Friday afternoon. His Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, was among those present.

Fubara had earlier arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport around 12:19 p.m., where he was received by a large crowd of supporters. His return came more than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu formally ended the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state.

During the period of federal intervention, Tinubu had appointed retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator. Ibas handed over power on Wednesday night.

Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, had been out of office since March 18, when Tinubu declared emergency rule, citing political unrest and a power tussle between Fubara and his predecessor, now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The feud between both men, which erupted months after Fubara’s inauguration in May 2023, split the Rivers State House of Assembly and deepened the state’s political crisis.

Although Fubara was absent at the Government House on Thursday when the House resumed sitting, Wike told Channels Television that the governor was not legally obliged to resume office that day.

The President’s intervention in June, which brought Fubara, Wike, and other stakeholders to the negotiation table, was seen as a key step toward reconciliation.
