GERMAN POLICE ARREST 22-YEAR-OLD SYRIAN IN BERLIN OVER SUSPECTED JIHADIST ATTACK PLOT
Agency Report

German authorities have arrested a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin on suspicion of preparing a “jihadist-motivated” attack, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The suspect was apprehended on Saturday during a special police operation in the Neukoelln district of the German capital. He was brought before an investigating judge on Sunday and ordered to be remanded in custody pending further investigation.
In a joint statement, Berlin police and prosecutors said the man is being investigated for “preparing an act of serious violence against the state” and for “spreading propaganda material of anti-constitutional and terrorist organisations.”
A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office told AFP that the suspect had been allegedly plotting a jihadist-inspired attack, although specific details of the planned assault have not been disclosed.
German newspaper Bild reported that special police units searched three residential addresses connected to the suspect and discovered items that could be used to build explosives. It also indicated that the planned attack was believed to target a location within Berlin, though no official confirmation has been made.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the arrest as evidence that Germany’s terrorist threat level “remains heightened,” even if sometimes “abstract.” He said the suspect, who entered Germany in 2023, was detected “in time before an attack could occur.”
Germany has faced several violent incidents in recent months, including knife attacks and assaults linked to both jihadist and far-right extremism.
Berlin has remained on high alert since the 2016 Christmas market attack, when a jihadist rammed a truck into a crowded market, killing 12 people and injuring dozens.
