The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the leader of a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising residents of several communities in the Ifo corridor, bringing relief to locals after months of unrest.
Police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, saying the breakthrough followed a targeted intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of Saturday, November 1, 2025, in the Oloshe area of Ifo Local Government.
According to Odutola, the operation led to the arrest of 32-year-old Lekan Annuoluwapo and his female companion, 33-year-old Ajoke Kareem, who were behind multiple armed robberies in Agosi, Old Bank Area, Olomu Road, Oju-Sango, Folam, Oloshe Road, Ikorita, and Ajowa communities.
Two major robbery incidents were linked to the gang. The first occurred on October 17, 2025, when two armed men attacked a woman sweeping a church compound, dispossessing her of her handbag containing cash. One of the arrested suspects, Wale Adeleye, reportedly confessed to committing the crime with Lekan using a locally made pistol.
A second attack took place a week later, during which a victim was shot in the chest after raising an alarm. The robbers fled, abandoning a locally made pistol with an empty cartridge at the scene. The victim later identified Lekan as one of the assailants.
Further investigation led to the arrest of 36-year-old Akpomoka Gabriel, also known as Akuru, identified as the gang’s principal accomplice. His arrest, according to Odutola, “triggered spontaneous jubilation across Ijoko and Ogba-Iyo neighbourhoods,” where residents had long lived in fear of the syndicate.
Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, commended the operatives for their professionalism and directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
He also ordered area commanders in Sango-Ota and Ifo to intensify patrols and strengthen security across known flashpoints as the year-end festive season approaches.
