The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to pay off more than 4,000 sacked teachers across the 13 Local Government Areas who were employed without due approval, in a bid to resolve the lingering crisis surrounding their recruitment.

The Commissioner for Education, John Mamman, made this known on Monday in Lafia, the state capital, during a ministerial briefing organised by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Ibrahim Tanko, to highlight the achievements of the present administration.

Mamman explained that the problem began when the recently dismissed management of the Nasarawa State Teachers Service Commission (TSC) exceeded the governor’s approved figure of 1,000 teachers, employing more than 4,000 without authorization.

According to him, investigations uncovered several irregularities in the recruitment process, prompting the government to cancel the entire exercise.

To cushion the impact on the sacked workers, Mamman said the government decided to pay those who had worked for some months their due salaries, while those who only reported to their duty posts but were not engaged would receive a one-time payment of ₦100,000 each.

He noted that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and fairness, adding that education remains a top priority of the Sule-led administration, which has consistently allocated the highest budgetary share to the sector since 2019.

The commissioner further assured that the state would construct and equip more schools with adequate furniture and teaching materials to ensure that children across Nasarawa receive quality education.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Ibrahim Tanko, said his ministry had created several platforms, including the ministerial briefing series, to inform and educate citizens about government policies and programmes.

He urged communities to take ownership of public projects such as schools and facilities provided by the state, safeguarding them from vandalism and misuse.

Tanko also announced that Governor Sule had approved ₦5.6 billion for the digitalisation of the Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS) to enhance operations in line with global standards.

“We are expecting the digital broadcast equipment to arrive soon. The government will also train NBS staff to build their capacity to manage the new facilities effectively,” he added.
