TRAIN DERAILS IN UK AFTER SUSPECTED LANDSLIDE, FOUR INJURED
A train deviated from its tracks Monday morning following a reported landslide in the secluded hills of northwest England, resulting in four individuals sustaining minor injuries, according to emergency and rail services.
Numerous passengers were evacuated from the 4:28 am (0428 GMT) Avanti West Coast service train traveling from Glasgow, Scotland, to London Euston station after it derailed at Shap, Cumbria, a gateway to the more elevated Lake District.
“The incident occurred subsequent to a suspected landslip in the region, which has been experiencing significant adverse weather conditions, with exceedingly heavy rainfall exacerbating the situation,” Network Rail stated in a press release.
“The foremost carriage came off the tracks but remained upright,” transport police noted, mentioning that 85 individuals were escorted from the train.
The incident obstructed all train services operating north of the northwestern city of Preston, according to rail services.
“We are investigating a train derailment near Shap in Cumbria following a notification by a train driver,” a spokesperson for Network Rail commented.
A total of 87 individuals were evaluated at the location, North West Ambulance Service reported on X, indicating that “only four suffered minor injuries” and no one required hospitalization.
An Avanti spokesperson verified that the incident transpired at 6:10 am.
“Our foremost concern is the safety and wellbeing of everyone who was aboard the train and ensuring their secure disembarkation. We are cooperating with emergency services present at the site,” the spokesperson added.
The incident occurred merely two days after a mass stabbing incident on a train in eastern England, where 10 individuals were injured, with one remaining in critical condition in the hospital.
A man has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder following the violent assault on the London-bound train from northern Doncaster, British Transport Police announced on Monday.
An annual report from the UK’s Office of Rail and Road disclosed that in the 12 months leading up to the end of March, there were five derailments nationwide, two of which involved passenger trains.
