NIGERIAN STUDENT JAILED IN UK FOR RAPING TEENAGER
Chiemka Okoronta, a Nigerian postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for the assault of a 17-year-old girl in Bradford.
As reported by the BBC, Okoronta and the victim were passengers on a night bus in Morley, Leeds, on March 25. Evidence presented at Bradford Crown Court on Monday revealed that he offered to share a taxi to Bradford with the teenager, who was stranded after her phone battery had died.
Prosecutors stated that the vehicle instead proceeded to Okoronta’s residence, where he enticed the girl inside, secured her in a bathroom, and assaulted her. The victim managed to escape following the incident and utilized a passerby’s phone to contact law enforcement.
Okoronta was found guilty on multiple counts of rape and will additionally serve three more years on an extended license; he will also be registered as a sex offender for life. The court was informed that he is likely to be deported to Nigeria upon completing his sentence.
In a statement reflecting the impact of the crime, the victim indicated that the attack had induced flashbacks and nightmares, articulating how the event “upended my life. ”
She remarked, “This incident has turned my life upside down. I experience flashbacks of what transpired; I have nightmares—one moment I feel fine, and the next, it all resurfaces. ”
Judge Sophie McKone characterized Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator” who purposefully isolated the teenager to perpetrate the crime.
West Yorkshire Police praised the victim for promptly reporting the incident.
Det Con Sue Sutcliffe stated, “I would like to commend the victim in this case for her tremendous courage in coming forward immediately to report this dreadful crime. I encourage anyone who has experienced a sexual offence to report it to us so we can take appropriate action. ”
