IWOBI CLARIFIES VIRAL HOTEL VIDEO AS NFF DEFENDS SUPER EAGLES’ LODGING IN MOROCCO

A new twist has emerged in the controversy surrounding a viral video shared by Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, which appeared to show substandard accommodation ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match in Morocco.
The video, which quickly spread across social media platforms, sparked outrage among Nigerian fans who described the lodging as “unbefitting” for the national team. Many likened the facility to a school hostel, igniting a heated debate about how Nigerian players are treated during international assignments.
Responding to the backlash, Iwobi clarified that his post was misunderstood, stating that he did not make any negative remarks about the hotel.
“I didn’t say anything; I just showed the video,” the Fulham midfielder explained, suggesting that his actions were taken out of context.
In a swift reaction, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) dismissed the criticism, clarifying that the Super Eagles are lodged at RIVE Hotel in Rabat. The federation noted that the viral video depicted an older building visible from the team’s window not their actual accommodation.
“RIVE was chosen because of its proximity to the team’s training facility and the stadium here in Rabat,” the NFF said in a statement.
The Super Eagles have since shifted focus to their high-stakes World Cup qualifier against Morocco, even as the hotel video controversy underscores the growing influence—and potential pitfalls of viral social media content in modern sports.
