Three people working with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, were attacked by unknown gunmen on Tuesday morning near the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, which is the capital of Imo State.

The attack took place between Umuowa and Ihite junction, which is close to the airport.
It happened as the group was traveling to the airport for official business.

According to sources, the attackers, who are thought to be escaping from a larger group of armed men, fired at the vehicle carrying the staff as they approached the airport area.

Otti’s Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha, confirmed the attack in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the officials involved were part of a preliminary team and not part of the governor’s main convoy.

Ukoha said, “In the early hours of today, December 2nd, an advance team of three members from the Office of the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, on duty to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Imo State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen.

“The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.”

He said the governor wasn’t involved in the incident and that nobody was hurt.

“The general public is being told that the convoy carrying Governor Otti was not part of the attack, and no one was hurt in the sad event,” the statement said.

In the meantime, the Imo State Police Command has not made any comments about this situation as of now.
