LAGOS REWARDS OUTSTANDING STUDENTS AT 2025 ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION AWARDS (PHOTOS)

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education on Tuesday, held the award presentation ceremony for the 2025 Essay Writing Competition, celebrating outstanding young writers across the state.

The event took place at the Education Resource Centre (ERC), Ojodu-Berger, and brought together students, teachers, administrators, and education stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, encouraged students to remain dedicated to their academic journey, urging them to “concentrate on your studies, do your assignments diligently, and learn to communicate,” noting that “the sky is just the beginning” for the young achievers.

She congratulated the winners, appreciated their teachers, and extended warm greetings to school principals and tutor-generals.

Earlier in her opening remarks, the Director, Co-curricular Services Division, Mrs. Oluyemisi A. Adebesin, described the ceremony as a celebration of “ideas, creativity, and the power of the written word.”

She noted the impressive participation across the state’s six education districts and SUBEB, praising students for demonstrating maturity and deep research in their submissions.

“Whether you walk away with a trophy or not, you are already a winner,” she told the finalists.

Speaking with Hotjist, Mrs. Adebebin explained that the annual competition is designed to promote creativity and writing skills among students across all levels.

She detailed the rigorous process, from topic dissemination to script submission, marking, verification exams, and final grading by WAEC-standard markers, emphasizing that Lagos “leads, and others follow” in academic excellence.

She added that the personalized trophies were part of the ministry’s efforts to encourage students to “write more and be creative.”

Top-performing students also shared their experiences.

Abdulyekeen Ameerat, who emerged first in the senior secondary category, described the competition as “a podium that gives us the voice to express ourselves.”

She appreciated the Lagos State Government and encouraged continuous support for youth empowerment.

Third-place winner, Adekoya Elizabeth of Adelaja Girls Secondary School, Bariga, expressed joy over her achievement, calling it an unexpected but fulfilling accomplishment.

“I made District Two proud… I’m very glad for this opportunity,” she said, adding that this was her first attempt at an essay competition.

Second-place winner, Muontari Muhammed, also reflected on the experience, thanking the Lagos State Government for the platform and noting his excitement about emerging among the top finalists.

On her part, the Director, Co-curricular Science and Technology, Education District II, Mrs. Adenike, applauded the winners for their intelligence, courage, and exceptional writing ability.

She also appreciated the Permanent Secretary for her continued support of co-curricular development in Lagos schools.

Highlights of the ceremony included the presentation of essays by the winners, who took turns reading their entries to the admiration of the audience.

The state government presented them with personalized trophies, school bags, writing materials, and other educational prizes.

The event reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to nurturing young talents, promoting literacy, and sustaining its leadership in quality basic and secondary education.
