A major controversy erupted on Tuesday at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Osogbo, as members of the Oyo State chapter of the party allegedly took over the Osun congress, acting as delegates and voting en masse.
Investigations and eyewitness accounts revealed that buses loaded with Oyo PDP members arrived in Osun late Monday night and early Tuesday morning through the Iwo and Ikire axes. Many of the buses reportedly parked at Adolak Hotel, the official venue of the congress.
Inside the hall, a significant number of participants were identified as Oyo PDP members, with very few Osun PDP delegates visibly present. The Ibadan-based Zonal Youth Leader of the party was said to have coordinated the mobilisation of Oyo members to Osogbo.
Several individuals at the venue admitted they were from Oyo State, with some confirming they had been recruited specifically for the congress.
Correspondents also observed police officers from Oyo State providing security for the mobilised participants, further fuelling concerns about external interference.
Amid the chaotic scene, security operatives arrested several suspected political thugs, who reportedly confessed that they were mobilised from the Oyo State Government House to participate in the event.
A PDP chieftain from Oyo State, who spoke on condition of anonymity, defended the development, alleging that the Osun PDP failed to conduct the required ward congresses to elect three ad-hoc delegates per ward.
“Osun PDP did not conduct the mandatory three ad-hoc delegates to vote at the congress,” he said. “So we filled the vacancies with our people from Oyo State. We cannot allow PDP to die here. That is why we had to mobilise.”
The incident has sparked widespread debate within party circles, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the congress and the deepening leadership crisis within the Osun PDP.
