The Federal Government has dismissed as false and misleading claims that it plans to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition figures, describing a circulating document alleging such moves as fabricated disinformation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, fnipr, said the document, which alleges the creation of a multi-agency task force tagged “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons), is entirely fictitious and has no basis in reality.

According to the statement, the document falsely claims that a task force comprising the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, was established to target prominent opposition figures, particularly within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), without due process.

The Federal Government categorically denied the existence of any such programme, stressing that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on its core priorities, including economic reforms, tackling insecurity, expanding trade opportunities, and restoring investor confidence.

The government warned that attempts to portray lawful accountability and anti-corruption efforts as political persecution were a deliberate effort by some political actors to shield influential individuals from scrutiny by relevant law enforcement agencies.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the government cited Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees freedom of association and assembly, noting that President Tinubu is constitutionally bound to uphold these rights and has a proven democratic record.

The statement further emphasised that under the current administration, the rule of law, due process, and the independence of institutions remain sacrosanct, adding that Nigeria’s security and judicial agencies are mandated to operate professionally and without political interference.

The Federal Government urged politicians and citizens to refrain from spreading disinformation and fake news, cautioning that as the 2027 general elections approach, there may be an increase in fabricated narratives and political blackmail.

It called on Nigerians to remain vigilant, reject divisive politics, and support efforts aimed at sustaining progress and national stability, assuring that the Tinubu administration will remain focused on delivering tangible results for the country as it enters the new year.
