The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is mourning the death of seven journalists who lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Gombe State on Monday.
The accident, reportedly caused by a tyre burst on the bus conveying them, occurred as the journalists were returning from a colleague’s wedding in Kaltungo Local Government Area of the state.
The Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samson Kaura, and the Director-General of Government House Press and Media Affairs, Ismaili Misili, confirmed that seven journalists died in the crash, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
In a statement, the NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya, expressed deep grief over the untimely demise of the journalists, describing it as a devastating loss to the journalism community in Gombe State and across the country.
“They were committed practitioners who served the public with courage, integrity, and professionalism. Their loss has left an irreplaceable void in our noble profession,” Yahya said.
The NUJ president also expressed the union’s solidarity with the families of the deceased and the Gombe State media community in this moment of grief.
“We pray that Almighty God grants eternal rest to the souls of the departed and gives their loved ones the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” he added.
“On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), the entire NUJ family nationwide, and the Nigerian media community, the Union extends its heartfelt condolences to the Gombe State Council of the NUJ, the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”
Yahya further noted that the incident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures and responsible driving to prevent avoidable loss of lives, particularly among professionals who frequently travel in the course of their duties.
