Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a political split with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike stated that he intends to back a candidate he can trust to succeed Fubara, emphasizing that he would avoid repeating what he described as the errors of the 2023 election.

The former Rivers State governor made the remarks over the weekend while addressing his supporters in Ahoada Local Government Area.

According to Wike, previous agreements with Governor Fubara were allegedly breached, making further political collaboration untenable.

“We will not repeat the mistakes of 2023,” he said, emphasizing that no individual would dictate his political decisions in Rivers State.

Wike also dismissed claims that recent political slogans and rallies would automatically secure an electoral ticket for any aspirant. The media recalls that Governor Fubara recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Clarifying his stance, Wike said his open support for President Bola Tinubu does not equate to automatic backing for Fubara’s re-election bid. He reiterated his support for Tinubu, citing the president’s goodwill towards Rivers State, including his own appointment as FCT Minister.

Despite this, Wike stressed that political decisions in Rivers State would be guided strictly by trust and aligned interests.

“So, if you like, shout about your mandate 50 times a day it will not earn you an automatic ticket. Bring everyone, shout as much as you want; it is still not an automatic ticket. Politics is about interest,” he said, adding that he would support only a candidate he can trust and “sleep with his eyes closed.”
