A senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Muhammadu Abdullahi Sugar, has called on the governors of Bauchi and Zamfara States to remain in the opposition party and resist overtures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing journalists in Kano, Sugar appealed to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal Dare to uphold their commitment to the PDP, cautioning that attempts by the APC-led federal government to influence defections could undermine Nigeria’s democratic integrity.

Sugar noted growing public dissatisfaction with the APC’s governance and expressed concern that the recent wave of defections by elected officials raises questions about political intimidation and the erosion of democratic values. He emphasized that switching allegiance under pressure breaches the mandate given by voters and does not solve the nation’s challenges.

Acknowledging that the PDP had experienced some defections, Sugar insisted that the party remains strong and resilient ahead of the 2027 general elections. He expressed confidence that the performance of PDP governors, especially in northern states, would reinforce the party’s credibility and restore public trust.
