The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has issued a firm warning to the contractor handling the Ikorodu-Itoki Road project, threatening to terminate the contract if ministry directives continue to be disregarded.
Umahi made the statement on Sunday during an on-site inspection of the project, which is being executed by GELD Construction Ltd., expressing dissatisfaction with both the pace and quality of work at the site.
The minister criticized the contractor for focusing on perceived challenges rather than collaborating with the government to achieve tangible progress.
“I am deeply disappointed. Instead of working with us to accomplish what is feasible at this stage, they are preoccupied with what they claim cannot be done,” Umahi said.
He further warned that the supervising engineer is responsible for reporting any disobedience by the contractor. “Failure to comply could result in the contractor’s arrest and termination of the contract,” he said.
To minimize traffic disruption along the corridor, Umahi directed that excavation work be conducted at night. He explained that the eight-meter-wide road would be constructed in sections, with night-time excavation followed by immediate backfilling using a stone base mixed with cement to allow smooth traffic flow.
“This method will provide a concrete-like finish and ensure seamless movement of traffic while construction continues section by section,” the minister added.
Umahi also revealed that the ministry will commence work on the first five kilometers by milling the existing surface and reusing the material to construct the road shoulders. While acknowledging that some sections cannot accommodate shoulders, he said night-time operations would include milling the full eight-meter width, followed by the application of 60 millimeters of binder and 40 millimeters of wearing course to ensure durability and safety.
The minister concluded by emphasizing that delays would no longer be tolerated and reiterated that decisive action would be taken if the contractor fails to comply with the outlined directives.
