LAGOS GOVT REPORTS 133 DEATHS AND N19BN+ PROPERTY LOSS FROM 2025 FIRES

LAGOS — The Lagos State government has disclosed that at least 133 lives and N19.72 billion worth of property were lost to fire incidents in 2025.
The figures were detailed in the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) 2025 activity report, released during the Staff Engagement event themed “People, Preparedness and Service Delivery: Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service” held on Tuesday at Alausa, Ikeja.
According to the report, the service received a total of 2,617 calls during the year, including 645 false alarms across 1,685 fire incidents. A total of 473 victims were rescued alive, and property worth N118.32 billion was saved.
Fire prevention activities included the inspection of 8,791 facilities, issuance of 7,997 certificates, and 90 reports.

In her address, Controller General of LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, highlighted operational challenges such as false alarms and inadequate water supply during emergency responses. She stated:
“This gathering is both timely and significant, as it allows us to reflect on our collective journey, assess our operational achievements, and reinforce our commitment to excellence in service delivery. Our people remain our greatest asset; preparedness is the backbone of our operational effectiveness; and service delivery is the ultimate measure of our impact on the lives and property of Lagosians.”
Adeseye emphasized that the programme aims to strengthen capacity, enhance professionalism, and foster a proactive approach to fire prevention, emergency response, and disaster risk reduction. She added that continuous training, shared experiences, and strategic engagement are key to equipping personnel with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to address the evolving fire safety challenges of a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos.
