ADC TO FACE FIRST MAJOR TEST IN OSUN, EKITI ELECTIONS — SOWUNMI

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has described the 2026 governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states as the first true test of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that political credibility is built on electoral performance rather than rhetoric.
Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on The Media Today, against the backdrop of increasing public debate over emerging opposition platforms.
Reacting to claims that the ADC is positioning itself as a rescue platform for Nigerians, he dismissed the notion, insisting that the party’s relevance would be determined by electoral results rather than public pronouncements.
According to him, the party’s first real challenge would come in the Osun and Ekiti governorship elections, whichever is held first, adding that political success is not achieved through what he described as “noise,” but through performance at the polls.
He also warned against drawing premature conclusions about the party’s future, arguing that political organisations need time to overcome entrenched habits and internal contradictions.
Sowunmi said it was still too early to make definitive judgments about the ADC, cautioning that reform within political groups is a gradual process shaped by human character and long-standing habits. According to him, without deliberate effort to confront and correct these tendencies, they are likely to persist over time.
The PDP chieftain further criticised what he described as “early signs” of entitlement within the party’s structure.
According to Sowunmi, some individuals were already laying claim to political tickets even before formally aligning with the party, despite the fact that it had yet to record any significant electoral success.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the Ekiti State governorship election for June 20, 2026, while the Osun State governorship poll is slated for August 8, 2026.
INEC has also unveiled the timetable for party primaries, publication of candidates and campaign activities, describing the processes as critical tests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission said it is taking steps to strengthen electoral credibility, including the deployment of Resident Electoral Commissioners outside their states of origin and further improvements to election technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
Meanwhile, major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have begun mobilising for the polls, which come less than a year before the 2027 presidential election.
