Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about her struggles with motherhood, revealing that she was initially unhappy after giving birth to her son and even broke down in tears when she learned she was having a boy instead of the girl she had hoped for.
In a recent interview with YouTuber Korty EO, Savage said she had always dreamed of having a daughter, a desire that made it difficult for her to bond with her son during his early years.
The award-winning singer recalled how childbirth affected both her emotional state and her career, including losing a major brand deal because of changes to her appearance after pregnancy. She admitted that at the time, she felt motherhood had ruined her professional life.
Looking back, however, Savage said her perspective has completely changed, describing her son as her closest companion.
“I didn’t bond with my son for the first year or two. I always wanted a girl, and when they told me it was a boy, I started crying,” she said.
“When he was born, he cried a lot and my body didn’t bounce back. I looked terrible. I was meant to do a Pepsi campaign and they turned me away. I remember thinking this boy has destroyed me. But now, he is my best friend.”

Savage also spoke about how her personal experiences have shaped the way she is raising her son, stressing the importance of teaching him respect and kindness towards women.
“I always tell him, your mum suffered, so make sure you treat women like queens,” she said. “It’s important for me to raise him to be a good man. He won’t be perfect, but at his core, I want him to be kind.”
Tiwa Savage welcomed her son, Jamil Balogun, in July 2015 with her former husband, Tunji Balogun. Jamil turned 10 in July 2025.
