The Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed support for the state government’s ongoing demolition of illegal structures and shanties along shorelines and beneath high-tension cables across the state.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Mr. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security, and Strategy, in a statement from Lagos.

The demolition, led by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, has primarily targeted areas such as Oworonsoki and Makoko, where residents have erected unapproved structures. Last Thursday, residents of Makoko staged a protest at the Assembly complex, urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to halt the demolitions.

Ogundipe, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 01, described the exercise as a necessary measure to protect lives and property.

“It is concerning that makeshift structures, especially along shorelines, have become havens for miscreants, street urchins, kidnappers, touts, and hawkers who vandalize public utilities and endanger citizens,” he said.

While acknowledging the hardship imposed on affected residents, Ogundipe emphasized that the demolitions are essential for safeguarding the wider community and ensuring adherence to the law.

“The government’s action demonstrates a commitment to preventing avoidable disasters and promoting sustainable urban development,” he added, describing the Assembly’s position as responsible and forward-looking.

He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with government officials, and comply with building regulations to prevent future violations. Ogundipe also assured that the Assembly would balance enforcement with empathy, ensuring that affected citizens receive support during the transition.
