The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ukana, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Eduma Essien, has urged students to promptly report any form of sexual pressure or harassment from lecturers to the institution’s management or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit for proper investigation and disciplinary action.
Essien also warned students against examination malpractice, cultism and other antisocial behaviours, stressing that the polytechnic has zero tolerance for such vices. She further advised them to familiarise themselves with the institution’s policies, rules and regulations.
Speaking on Tuesday during the 12th orientation exercise for newly admitted students, the rector disclosed that the sale of handouts is prohibited in the polytechnic, adding that students are only expected to purchase approved textbooks.
She assured the students that the institution would continue to provide a conducive learning environment anchored on discipline, safety and academic excellence.
“I encourage you to report any form of sexual pressure from lecturers to the management or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit. This institution does not tolerate the exchange of gifts or favours for marks,” she said.
Essien emphasised that the polytechnic would not condone cultism or examination malpractice, noting that its goal is to produce graduates who can confidently defend their certificates anywhere.
She further explained that students would graduate not only with academic qualifications but also with practical skills, as the polytechnic runs a mandatory skills acquisition programme aimed at enhancing employability.
