A 22-year-old Chelsea supporter, Marcus, was stabbed and hospitalized after being attacked by a group of Napoli “ultras” in the centre of Naples ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match between Chelsea and Napoli.

Speaking to reporters, Marcus described the incident as a “shock.” He said he and a group of seven or eight friends were confronted by 20–30 people dressed in black in a poorly lit area. “Some people knew what was happening and ran straight away,” he said. Marcus suffered a wound to his left cheek, which he believes was caused by a screwdriver or possibly a Stanley blade.

Chelsea FC issued a warning to supporters following the incident, urging fans to exercise caution while in Naples. In a statement, the club said: “Two fans are being treated in the hospital, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The club would like to remind all supporters to exercise extreme caution whilst in the city and take note of the advice shared ahead of this fixture.”

Marcus was treated in hospital between 23:00 and 04:00 local time and later reported the attack to police. He intends to attend the match but plans to leave Naples for Rome afterward.

Another fan was also hospitalized after being punched and kicked. UEFA, European football’s governing body, has been contacted for comment on the incident.
