PREMIER LEAGUE TOUGHER PHYSICALLY THAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – GORDON

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has offered an honest take on the differences between Premier League and Champions League football, asserting that the domestic league has grown significantly more physical and fast-paced than European competition.
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s crucial away clash against Paris Saint-Germain, Gordon explained that the Premier League’s intensity often transforms matches into battles decided by duels and set-pieces rather than structured, possession-based play.
“There is not much control, it’s a running game, and sometimes it’s about duels: who wins the duels, wins the game,” he said.
In contrast, the 23-year-old winger described the Champions League as more open, with teams focusing on creativity and sustained attacking play. “In the Champions League, teams are much more open. They all try to play; it’s less transitional,” Gordon added.

He also highlighted how the Premier League has evolved into a competition dominated by physicality and set-piece situations. “In the Premier League now, you have seen a lot more long throw-ins and set-pieces. It’s become a lot slower and a lot more set-piece-based, I would say,” he said, likening some matches to a basketball-style endurance test due to the relentless pace.
Gordon’s comments have sparked discussions among fans and pundits, with many agreeing that English football has shifted toward high-intensity, physical contests at the expense of tactical fluidity.
Meanwhile, attention turns to Newcastle’s showdown with PSG, with both clubs fighting to stay in the top eight, while teams like Chelsea and Barcelona seek to close the gap in the Champions League standings.
