SENATE TO HOLD EXECUTIVE BRIEFING ON U.S. AIR STRIKES IN SOKOTO FOLLOWING LAWMAKER CONCERNS

The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to hold a closed-door briefing on the December 25, 2025, U.S. air strikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State, following concerns raised over the National Assembly’s exclusion from prior discussions.
Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, raised the issue under Order 42 (Matters of Privilege) during plenary, arguing that the air strikes infringed Nigeria’s territorial integrity and should have involved legislative oversight.
“It is not right. If we begin to dilly-dally, it becomes a problem. The leadership of the National Assembly should be briefed by the security agencies on what actually happened. This is a violation of our territorial integrity,” Ningi said, cautioning that allowing foreign military operations without parliamentary consultation could set a dangerous precedent.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio responded that arrangements for a closed executive briefing had been made but were postponed due to the suspension of legislative activities following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki on December 31, 2025.

“This is a security matter and we really should not discuss it in the open. We wanted to do it behind closed doors, but because of Senator Akwashiki, we couldn’t. Your point of order is noted, and arrangements will be made to brief senators in a closed session,” Akpabio stated.
The U.S. air strikes were conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities, targeting camps linked to the Islamic State group. The U.S. Africa Command confirmed that several ISIS fighters were killed in the operation.
