The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut down Terminal 1 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos in one month for extensive rehabilitation and expansion works.

The announcement came as the authority responded to a power outage at the terminal on Saturday. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), FAAN explained that the outage was caused by a fault in the changeover circuit and that interim measures were activated to restore power.

“Our teams took immediate action to bridge the gap and transfer supply to the secondary grid, and interim backup measures were activated to restore services as quickly as possible,” FAAN said, apologising to passengers and stakeholders affected by the disruption.

The agency noted that permanent backup equipment is not feasible at this time due to the upcoming terminal rehabilitation. “As we prepare to shut down Terminal 1 in one month as part of the MMIA Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, it is not feasible to install permanent new or additional backup equipment at this time,” FAAN added.

The authority assured passengers of its commitment to delivering a safer and more reliable travel experience, thanking them for their patience during the transition from temporary solutions to lasting improvements.

Power outages at MMIA are not uncommon, with multiple incidents reported in 2018, 2024, and 2026. The rehabilitation of Terminal 1 is part of a broader aviation infrastructure upgrade approved by the federal executive council in August 2025, involving contracts worth over N900 billion.

FAAN confirmed that reconstruction work had already commenced as of September 4, 2025.
