The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has inaugurated newly refurbished accommodation for corporals and other junior ranks at the Giginya Cantonment in Sokoto State, as part of efforts to enhance the living conditions of Nigerian Army personnel.
The renovated quarters are part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to improving soldiers’ welfare, especially those deployed to operational zones across the North-West.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Saturday, Musa said the project underscores the government’s determination to provide adequate support for troops both on and off the battlefield.
“Our personnel are making daily sacrifices in defence of the nation. Providing them with decent and secure housing is not a privilege, but a responsibility we must continue to uphold,” he said.
The minister noted that non-commissioned officers remain central to the effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, adding that improved welfare contributes directly to discipline, morale and mission success.
He also commended the Nigerian Army leadership for sustaining infrastructure development across formations nationwide.
The upgraded quarters, built to house corporals and other lower ranks along with their families, have been equipped with modern facilities, better ventilation and strengthened security features to address accommodation challenges within the cantonment.
Earlier, the Commander, 8 Division Garrison, Brig. Gen. Abdumalik Muhammed, described the project as both timely and impactful, particularly as the Nigerian Army steps up operations against banditry and other security threats across the North-West.
He noted that the initiative would greatly enhance personnel welfare and boost morale, encouraging troops to give their utmost in service to the nation.
Giginya Cantonment houses the 8 Division, a critical formation engaged in ongoing security operations in the region, highlighting the need for sustained welfare initiatives for soldiers deployed in the area.
The ceremony ended with the unveiling of the facility, an inspection tour by the minister and senior officers, the symbolic presentation of keys to beneficiaries, and a group photograph.
