SEVEN KILLED, 70 INJURED IN FATAL KANO ROAD CRASH
Agency report
No fewer than seven people lost their lives, while 70 others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Sunday morning along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Dan Ja in Kano State.
A statement issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, said the crash happened at about 8:33 a.m. and involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG.
The statement, signed by CRC Abdullahi Labaran, Public Relations Officer of the FRSC Kano State Sector Command, revealed that the command received a distress call at 8:35 a.m., and a rescue team arrived at the scene five minutes later, at 8:40 a.m., to begin emergency operations.
“A total of 105 persons were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, seven persons lost their lives, while 70 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, comprising 55 males and 15 females,” the statement said.
The FRSC noted that preliminary findings linked the crash to excessive speed and loss of control, adding that the situation was aggravated by the illegal act of conveying passengers together with goods.
“The suspected cause of the crash was over-speeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous practice of mixing goods with passengers. The crash was classified as a single-vehicle fatal crash,” the FRSC stated.

It added that the road condition was good at the time of the incident, and no items were recovered from the scene.
The injured victims were evacuated to four hospitals across Kano metropolis and its environs. According to the FRSC, 24 victims were taken to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, another 24 to Gezawa General Hospital, 20 to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, while seven victims were evacuated to Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Nasarawa.
Reacting to the incident, the FRSC commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
“The Corps strongly warns motorists, especially commercial drivers, against over-speeding, reckless driving, and the illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles, as these unsafe practices continue to result in avoidable loss of lives,” the statement warned.
The FRSC further urged members of the public to remain safety-conscious and to strictly comply with traffic regulations to protect lives and property.
