EPL: ‘HE’LL MAKE THEM CHEER’ – SIMEONE IN CONTENTION FOR MAN UNITED MANAGER JOB

By: Fasasi Hammad
Former Premier League star Andy Townsend has suggested that Manchester United should appoint Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid’s manager, as their permanent coach this summer to help the club compete with Arsenal and Manchester City.
Townsend believes Simeone’s intense management style could push United’s players to work harder and secure wins, even though his tactics emphasize defensive solidity.
Manchester United appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager on January 13, 2026, replacing Ruben Amorim. Carrick has enjoyed a strong start, recording four wins and a draw in five matches, including victories over Arsenal and Manchester City.
Although Carrick’s current contract runs only until the end of the season, many fans are calling for him to be made permanent due to his impressive results.

Speaking to the Media, Townsend said, “While Michael Carrick has done a great job, I think there are others better suited to manage a club like Manchester United. You need a top-level manager who has experience with elite players, can handle pressure from fans and owners, and deliver results consistently.
“I don’t think Antonio Conte is the right fit. The manager I’d most like to see at United is Diego Simeone. His style at Atletico Madrid, his focus on results and discipline, suits what United need right now. Fans may prefer flamboyant football, but the priority is catching up with teams like Manchester City and Liverpool and overtaking Arsenal.
“You need a manager who can put constant pressure on players and demand top performances. Simeone has proven he can do that.”
Simeone has established himself as one of Europe’s elite managers since taking charge of Atletico Madrid in 2011, guiding the club to eight major trophies, including two LaLiga titles. Townsend believes his experience and winning mentality could be exactly what Manchester United need.
