David Umahi, minister of works, has instructed his legal team to initiate court action against businesswoman Tracy Ohiri over renewed claims that he owes her about N250 million for services rendered during his 2015 governorship campaign in Ebonyi State.

The dispute between Umahi and Ohiri has intensified in recent weeks, with the businesswoman accusing the minister of sexual harassment and failure to settle an alleged campaign-related debt.

Ohiri claimed she was owed N250 million for promotional and printing services provided during Umahi’s 2015 campaign, alleging that repeated requests for payment were met with inappropriate advances, which she rejected. She further said the situation escalated into threats and eventual police involvement.

She was later arrested in Lagos over alleged cyberbullying tied to her social media posts on the matter and transferred to Abuja, where she was detained at the FCT police command. She was subsequently arraigned before a magistrate court in Wuse on a defamation charge and granted bail.

Amid the controversy, Ohiri issued a public apology in a viral video after the intervention of her lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, and deleted her earlier posts, withdrawing the allegations.

However, she later claimed in another video that she was pressured into making the retraction and that Umahi had agreed to compensate her, alleging the payment was not made before the apology was released.

In a statement on Saturday, Umahi’s media aide, Francis Nwaz, said the minister had challenged Ohiri to present verifiable evidence of her claims, promising that she would receive N1 billion if she could substantiate them.

Nwaz maintained that Abubakar acted in good faith and did not negotiate or receive any payment on behalf of the minister, adding that some well-meaning individuals had independently shown interest in assisting Ohiri.

He said Umahi had set two conditions for resolving the matter: either it be settled in court or Ohiri provide credible evidence, including relevant communications, to support her allegations.

According to him, following Ohiri’s failure to meet these conditions, particularly her inability to provide verifiable proof, the minister has now directed his lawyers to proceed with legal action.

Nwaz added that Umahi had remained silent for years despite repeated allegations but decided to respond due to recent developments, noting that public understanding of the issue was evolving.
