Popular Nigerian rapper Zlatan Ibile has disclosed that his parents initially reacted with suspicion rather than excitement to his sudden rise to wealth.
Speaking on a recent episode of the YACN podcast, the Zanku crooner said that after gaining prominence in 2019, he purchased a house for his parents in the upscale Lekki area of Lagos. However, they declined the gift due to concerns about the source of his income, which appeared sudden to them.
According to the singer, his parents found it difficult to believe that he was able to acquire the luxury property solely from his music career.
Recalling the experience, Zlatan Ibile said, “When I rose to fame in 2019, I bought my first house in Lekki and decided to gift it to my parents. When I informed them, they were surprised and questioned how I could afford such a property within a year, asking if I was involved in anything beyond music.”
He explained that their reaction left him feeling hurt, as he had intended to prioritise their comfort, yet they doubted the legitimacy of his success.
According to the rapper, his parents requested time to pray for seven days before deciding whether to accept the gift. He added that he eventually had to provide his bank statements and proof of his music earnings to convince them.
Zlatan also advised parents to verify the sources of their children’s wealth before accepting expensive gifts.
