MAN UNITED DEFEAT LIVERPOOL TO SEAL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT

Manchester United booked their place in next season’s Champions League after Kobbie Mainoo struck the winner in a dramatic 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
United raced into a 2-0 lead within 15 minutes thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, but lost control after the break as Arne Slot’s side fought back through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo. Mainoo, however, sealed the win with a decisive late goal.
The result marks United’s return to Europe’s top competition after a two-year absence and strengthens Michael Carrick’s case to remain in charge next season.
Mainoo has been central to United’s resurgence since Carrick took over in January.
Overlooked by Ruben Amorim, the England midfielder earned a new five-year contract this week and celebrated in style with a cool finish from the edge of the box to edge a wild encounter.
Third-placed United open up a six-point lead over Liverpool and are guaranteed to finish in the top five.
Despite an 11th league defeat of the season, Liverpool likely need only three points from their three remaining games to also secure a place in the Champions League.
Slot’s side arrived at Old Trafford depleted without the forward trio of Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak through injury.
United sensed blood and were well worthy of their early two-goal lead.
Cunha was afforded two chances to find his range from the edge of the box to open the scoring.
The Brazilian’s strike flicked off Alexis MacAllister to give Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman no chance.
The waves of United attack kept coming and Sesko appealed for a penalty after failing to beat Woodman from Bruno Fernandes’ precise pass.
Seconds later the Slovenian bundled the ball over the line from Fernandes’ header back across goal.
Fernandes was inches away from a third when he blasted Bryan Mbeumo’s cross wide.
But the warning signs of what was to come in the second half for United were also there before the break.
Gakpo curled wide on one of the many occasions Liverpool were able to pierce the heart of the Red Devils’ midfield.
Sesko was substituted at half-time for Amad Diallo, and the Ivorian nearly handed Liverpool a lifeline moments after coming on.
Dominik Szoboszlai capitalised on Amad’s misplaced pass, sprinting unchallenged from his own half before calmly finishing into the bottom corner.
United once again contributed to their own problems for the equaliser.
On this occasion, goalkeeper Senne Lammens’ pass was intercepted by Alexis Mac Allister, who quickly found Szoboszlai, and the Hungarian unselfishly set up Cody Gakpo for a simple tap-in.
With little at stake, both sides abandoned caution and pushed forward in search of a winner.
The breakthrough eventually came when a poor clearance from Mac Allister fell kindly to Kobbie Mainoo, who surged forward and neatly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
It marked United’s first league double over Liverpool since the 2015–16 season, highlighting a dramatic turnaround in fortunes compared to last year.
In contrast, Liverpool had finished 14 places and 42 points ahead last season, equalling United’s record of 20 English top-flight titles.
Since taking charge, Carrick has also recorded wins over Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea, and has now achieved his primary objective—securing Champions League football—strengthening his case to remain in the role.
