The immediate past president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has accused a few individuals of dragging the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to what he described as its lowest point ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He made the remarks in a statement issued on Friday in response to a query issued by the NLC to its Lagos State Council Chairperson, Agnes Sessi, over her involvement with the Working People United (WoPU) association.
The NLC, under its President, Joe Ajaero, had queried Sessi following her inauguration into the political support group.
Reacting to the development, the former PENGASSAN president, who is also the coordinator of WoPU, accused the NLC leadership of double standards and violating Sessi’s fundamental right to freedom of association.
He argued that the labour centre had shifted attention away from its constitutional responsibility of protecting workers’ welfare and was increasingly becoming involved in partisan politics.
According to him, there is no provision in the NLC constitution requiring political support groups to obtain approval from certain individuals within the labour hierarchy before operating.
He further criticised what he described as attempts by some NLC officials to dictate which political parties workers, unions and affiliates should support.
He said such actions were inappropriate and capable of undermining the reputation and credibility of the labour movement.
“It is unfortunate that some persons in the NLC are now arrogating powers they do not possess by directing individuals, unions and affiliates that their members should only join and support the Labour Party,” he said.
He described the situation as “laughable and appalling,” warning that the actions of a few individuals were dragging the NLC to “its very lowest ebb.”
