2027: OPPOSITION SUMMIT SETS STRATEGY TO UNSEAT TINUBU

The Nigerian opposition is set to converge on Abuja on Monday for a summit focused on building a united political front and developing strategies to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.
The summit, organised by the political pressure group G-100, comes amid disagreements among opposition parties over possible alliances and the selection of a consensus presidential candidate.
The Social Democratic Party and the Peoples Redemption Party have confirmed their participation, while the Peoples Democratic Party has distanced itself from the gathering.
Led by former Director-General of the Progressives Governors Forum, Salihu Lukman, the G-100 believes a divided opposition would struggle to defeat an incumbent party with significant organisational and financial advantages.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the group called on opposition parties to set aside their differences and approach the summit with a commitment to cooperation.
It argued that previous elections had shown that a fragmented opposition could inadvertently strengthen an incumbent by splitting votes, resources and political support.
The SDP confirmed that its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, alongside the party’s national leadership, would attend the summit at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The PRP also confirmed its participation, while the PDP said it was neither aware of the summit nor involved in any proposed opposition alliance outside its own structures.
The G-100 said the meeting was not intended to compel parties to abandon their identities or political ambitions, but to create a framework for dialogue, coordination and cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group maintained that opposition parties must prioritise the broader interests of Nigerians over individual political ambitions if they hope to present a credible alternative to the ruling APC.
The push for opposition unity comes as several parties and political figures position themselves for the 2027 presidential contest, with President Tinubu seeking re-election.
However, disagreements over presidential ambitions, party structures and the choice of a consensus candidate remain major challenges to the formation of a unified opposition front.
